Barr Group's Embedded Systems Safety & Security Survey is a study of the concerns and design practices of professional embedded systems designers around the world, with a special focus on current trends in regard to safety and security. In 2018, we received responses from more than 1,700 designers of embedded systems.
Data from the answers to each of the questions as well as an analysis of that data and multi-year trends that appear to reflect changes in our industry can be found in the free 100+ page 2018 Embedded Systems Safety & Security Survey PDF download.
Infographic: The Internet of INSECURE Things
Nearly two thirds of the surveyed engineers indicated that their current project would be attached to the Internet sometimes or always. Disturbingly, more than 1 in 5 of these designers also answered that security was not on the list of project requirements! And even those designers that aim to secure their products are not doing many simple things that could easily increase the security, such as encrypting data and commands sent over the network. These and other explanations of The Internet of INSECURE Things are summarized in the below infographic. Click on the image to download a free full-resolution version.

Almost 30% of the surveyed engineers indicated that their current project could kill or injure one or more people if it malfunctioned. Concerningly, many of these same designers are omitting software design process steps that are known to cost-effectively prevent and kill software bugs before they cause malfunction, such as performing regression testing.
