Answers to the questions litigation attorneys ask us most. Do not see yours? Contact us for a free, confidential consultation.
Getting Started
How does the process work?
It starts with a conversation. You share the details of your case with us, the technology involved, your timeline, and what you need from an expert. This consultation is free, confidential, and comes with no obligation. Within 2 to 3 business days, we present you with targeted expert candidates from our network and explain why each is suited to your case's specific technical requirements. Once you select an expert, you retain them directly, and our fee is built into their hourly rate, so there's no extra charge for our matchmaking service.
What if I'm not sure exactly what kind of expert I need?
That's exactly what we're here for. Unlike online directories where you need to know what you're looking for, we take the time to understand your case and its unique technical nuances. Our team includes engineers and computer scientists who can translate the technical aspects of your litigation into the right expert profile. When we recommend someone, you'll understand precisely why they're the right fit for your specific case.
Why not just use my own network or have an associate run the search?
Many attorneys start there, and for a familiar field it can work. The difficulty with a niche technical matter is that your own network reaches only the people you already know, and an associate can spend many billable hours without being able to judge which expert will hold up under Daubert and cross-examination. We do that vetting for you: engineer-reviewed, conflicts-checked, and matched to the specific issues in your case. You get a short list of genuinely qualified candidates instead of a research project, at no cost unless you retain.
How quickly can you find an expert?
Because we draw on a proprietary database of more than 10,000 experts across every field, hundreds of them under active contract, we can typically present you with strong candidates within 2 to 3 business days. We understand that litigation timelines are often tight, and we pride ourselves on responding quickly while still ensuring quality matches. If you have an urgent deadline, let us know, we'll do everything we can to accommodate your timeline.
Cost & Compensation
How does Barr Group's compensation work?
The initial expert search is always free, and there's no separate fee for our consultation and recommendation service. Our compensation is built into the expert's hourly rate, so we only get paid when we've successfully connected you with an expert you choose to retain. This structure ensures we're fully invested in finding you the best possible match.
Does working with a high-quality expert cost more overall?
Often, no. While top-tier experts may have higher hourly rates, their deep experience and expertise typically mean they need fewer hours to deliver impactful analysis and reports. They identify key issues faster, communicate more effectively, and produce work that holds up under scrutiny. The result is frequently a more cost-effective solution overall, stronger positioning for your case without budget overruns.
On a big software case, can we save money by using a lower-cost team for the code review?
Often yes, and it is common practice. On large matters much of the line-by-line code review is done by non-testifying reviewers at lower rates, which is a sensible way to manage cost. The point to watch is quality and accountability, not price by itself. Some lower-cost providers compete mainly on rate and cut corners that only surface later, sometimes after a report is filed. Before committing to a review team, it is worth checking that a testifying expert owns the underlying review, that the reviewers have real development experience in the languages at issue, that there is a quality check before findings reach a claim chart, and that the methodology is documented well enough to survive cross-examination. For a fuller walk-through, see our guide to vetting a source code review team. We are glad to help you scope a review team that is both cost-effective and defensible.
Is there a charge if you can't find a suitable expert?
No. Our consultation and search are free. If for any reason we're unable to identify an expert who meets your case requirements, you owe us nothing. We succeed only when you do.
Trust & Confidentiality
Is my expert search confidential?
Absolutely. We treat each case with the discretion it deserves. Your search won't be shared publicly, and you maintain complete control over how your case is presented and who knows you're seeking expert assistance. We understand the strategic importance of confidentiality in litigation and protect your information accordingly.

Working Together
I've worked with a Barr Group expert before. Can I request them again?
Absolutely. Many attorneys return to us specifically to work with experts they've had success with before. Just let us know who you'd like to work with, and we'll check their availability and handle the coordination. If they're unavailable or a conflict exists, we can recommend similar experts from our network.
What if I need multiple experts for the same case?
Complex cases often require expertise across multiple technical domains. We can assemble teams of complementary experts, for example, a software architecture expert alongside a cybersecurity specialist, or an embedded systems engineer paired with a telecommunications expert. We coordinate to ensure your expert team works together effectively.
Do you provide consulting experts as well as testifying experts?
Yes. In addition to testifying expert witnesses, we provide non-testifying consulting experts who can help you understand the technical issues, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your case, and prepare for depositions and trial, all without the disclosure requirements that apply to testifying experts.
