DirecTV Anti-Piracy Litigation

Working for DirecTV, a team of Barr Group's engineers reverse engineered and forensically tested over one hundred electronic circuits that were alleged to be designed primarily for use in the hacking of broadcast satellite TV communications.  In total, Barr Group’s engineers wrote more than 6,000 pages of expert reports and testified in more than 20 courtrooms.

Toyota Unintended Acceleration Litigation

A multi-disciplinary team from Barr Group worked together to examine engine control software and related electronics used in millions of Toyota vehicles, located defects in the software that could lead to unintended acceleration events, and documented its findings in an expert report of more than 700 pages.  The lead experts from Barr Group provided deposition testimony in associated product liability litigation.  CTO Michael Barr testified before a jury in a case at which the jury found Toyota liable.

EchoStar v. NDS Group

In this case, there was an allegation that security subsystem provider NDS Group first reverse engineered a competitor’s smartcard-based security system and then covertly shared details of identified weak points with a group of hackers. A pair of Barr Group’s experts worked on various aspects of this case about satellite TV hacking.  In addition to studying production documents relating to the design of the security system, our team conducted forensic testing and analysis of hacking devices and electronics reverse engineering.  Barr Group client NDS prevailed after a Barr Group expert provided crucial testimony at a jury trial.

EchoStar v. Freetech and EchoStar v. nFusion

Working once on behalf of EchoStar and once against, a Barr Group engineer reviewed the design of the electronics and software of a set of intriguing satellite TV hacking devices that were sold as legitimate satellite TV receivers but able to have their firmware upgraded for use in hacking the company’s signals.

Antonick v. Electronic Arts

Working on behalf of the plaintiff and original author of the Madden football video games, a team of Barr Group engineers compared software source code for various versions of the Madden game to reach opinions about software copyright infringement.  The team lead provided a written expert report as well as testimony at deposition and in front of the jury.

Videotron v. Bell ExpressVu

In yet another case relating to the security of broadcast satellite TV signals, two of Barr Group’s testifying experts worked together to explain to the judge how hackers were able to steal satellite TV from Canadian operator Bell ExpressVu and about the electronic countermeasures and smart card upgrades used by the company to resecure its system.

CCP Systems v. Samsung

Working on behalf of Samsung, a group of Barr Group’s engineers studied millions of lines of software source code for multi-function printers in this case of alleged software copyright infringement.  An expert from Barr Group testified at deposition and in the mediation hearing that eventually resolved the case in favor of our client.

Baxter Healthcare v. Fresenius
